Malcolm's Meanderings!

This month's thoughts from our Vicar

December, 2009

Well, it’s nearly here!   Yes,  Christmas;  that time of the year when we think about families and celebrating and going on holiday.   But I’ve missed something out - the birth of Jesus Christ.   But let’s be honest,   for most,  my first statement is more to the truth.   Those crowds that attended worship at Christmas time are no longer there.   Sure,  the Cathedral may have big congregations,  but many of those would be visitors to the city.   When I lived in Queenstown,  the locals probably only made up 20% (if that) of the Christmas congregations.   The local parish churches see dwindling numbers at these services and,  I must admit,  I feel a bit sad when Christ’s birth is relegated further down the list of people’s priorities.

It was lovely to have Bishop Victoria with us on All Saints Day.   I’m sure she enjoyed talking to people,  after the service,  over a cuppa.   She is a down to earth person and easy to talk to.

We have,  sadly,  said our farewells to three of our faithful members in recent weeks - Leone Hedges,  Angela Guy and Don Roberts.   Over the years they have given much to parish life in different ways.   Sometimes it’s easy to forget the work that some of our elderly folk have contributed to God’s Church,   here in Burwood and Marshland.   Sickness and frailty take their toll and they are no longer able to worship with us and maybe even move to other parts of the city to be near family or go into rest homes.   Christmas is a good time to remember these people and the foundation that they have given to us today.   Church life is ever evolving,  as one generation moves on and another has to take up the reins.

As you prepare for the Christmas season,  please spare a thought and a prayer for those who are suffering in one way or another.   They may have lost a loved one this year;   they may have become unemployed;  sickness may have caused a change of lifestyle - whatever the reason,  they need our prayers and love.

May you have a blessed and peaceful Christmas and may God’s blessing be with you.
